The Maldives needs no introduction. 115 atolls, 1,200 coral islands, 400+ resorts — and some of the clearest water on the planet. But for Indian honeymooners, the Maldives can feel overwhelming: which atoll? which resort? how much? which season?
I've been sending couples to the Maldives for 11 years and have personally visited 7 times. This guide answers every question I've ever been asked — so you can plan confidently without expensive mistakes.
- Best Time to Visit: November to April (dry season, calm seas)
- Visa: Free on arrival for Indian passport holders (30 days)
- Currency: USD (widely accepted) + Maldivian Rufiyaa
- Flight Time: ~4 hours from Delhi / ~3.5 hours from Mumbai
- Budget Range: ₹80,000 – ₹5,00,000+ per couple (7 nights)
- Capital: Malé — most resorts are a speedboat or seaplane away
Which Atoll is Right for You?
The Maldives is divided into 26 atolls, but most tourists visit resorts in North Malé, South Malé, Ari, and Baa atolls. Here's how to choose:
| Atoll | Best For | Transfer | Avg. Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| North Malé | First-timers, value | 15–30 min speedboat | ₹1.2L–2.5L/couple/night |
| South Malé | Honeymoon, diving | 30–60 min speedboat | ₹1.5L–3L/couple/night |
| Ari Atoll | Whale sharks, luxury | 25 min seaplane | ₹2.5L–5L/couple/night |
| Baa Atoll | Manta rays, seclusion | 30 min seaplane | ₹3L–6L+/couple/night |
My recommendation for honeymooners on a ₹1.5–2.5L budget: South Malé Atoll. It has stunning overwater villas, beautiful house reef diving, and easy speedboat access — no expensive seaplane required.
Overwater Villa vs Beach Villa
Everyone asks this. Here's the honest answer:
- Overwater Bungalow — Iconic. Private deck over the ocean, glass floor panels, direct water entry. More expensive (₹40–80K/night more). Worth it if budget allows.
- Beach Villa with Private Pool — Direct beach access, plunge pool, more privacy from passing boats. Often better value, and some honeymooners prefer the natural sand-to-sea flow.
- Our Pick: If you can afford it, overwater. If budget is tight, a beach villa with a pool is not a compromise — it's a different kind of magic.
Best Time to Visit
The Maldives has two seasons:
- Dry Season (Nov–Apr): Best weather, calm seas, excellent visibility for snorkelling. Peak season = higher prices, book 3–6 months early.
- Wet Season (May–Oct): More rain and wind, but prices drop 30–50%, resorts are quieter, and you often still get beautiful days. Great for budget honeymooners.
"The Maldives in September surprised us completely — we had 5 sunny days out of 6, the resort was nearly empty, and we paid half what our friends paid in February." — Kavya & Nikhil, Arrival Holidays clients · Maldives 2025
How Much Does a Maldives Honeymoon Cost?
For an Indian couple flying from Delhi or Mumbai:
| Budget Level | Accommodation | Total Cost (7N) |
|---|---|---|
| Budget (₹80K–1.2L) | Guesthouse on local island | ₹80,000–₹1,20,000 |
| Mid-range (₹1.5L–2.5L) | 3–4★ resort, beach villa | ₹1,50,000–₹2,50,000 |
| Luxury (₹3L–5L) | 5★ resort, overwater villa | ₹3,00,000–₹5,00,000 |
| Ultra (₹5L+) | Private island or suite | ₹5,00,000+ |
Our most popular Maldives honeymoon package is priced at ₹1,24,999 per person — 5 nights at a 4★ resort in South Malé with overwater villa, daily breakfast + dinner, airport transfer, and a complimentary candle dinner on the beach.

What to Do in the Maldives
- 🤿 Snorkelling the house reef — sea turtles, reef sharks, eagle rays
- 🌅 Sunset dolphin cruise — nearly every resort offers this (₹3–6K/couple)
- 💆 Overwater spa treatment — float room, couples massage, signature rituals
- 🍽️ Candle dinner on a sandbank — the ultimate romantic experience
- 🏄 Watersports — jet ski, kayak, paddleboard, parasailing
- 🐟 Big game fishing — catch mahi-mahi and tuna, or let them go
- 🌊 Surfing (May–Sep) — world-class waves near North Malé Atoll
- Book your seaplane at the same time as your resort — they fill up fast
- Carry USD in cash — exchange rates at resorts are poor
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen — regular sunscreen is banned in many resorts
- Tell us it's your honeymoon when booking — resorts often add complimentary upgrades
- Book the half-board meal plan — à la carte dining at resorts is extremely expensive
- Check if your resort has a house reef before booking — some don't
